HERD

herdLed by local architectural designer and entrepreneur James Owen Webster, HERD is ‘The Home of Young Creatives’. The gang occupied Unit 6768 at Brixton Village from December to March 2009-10.

HERD combined a design studio with a retail space and was home to several young creative businesses. Their time at Brixton Village saw them make breakthroughs in their own work — fashion collaborative Draw in Light got their work stocked by Liberty, while furniture and lighting designers Show and Tell ended up on TV. Other members of the collective included portrait photographer Jackie King and music industry photographer Suzie Blake.

James himself is the latest in a long line of enterprising Websters to set up shop in Brixton. His great, great grandfather founded Webster’s shoe store — one of the longest-standing independent retailers in the town centre.
